JNU Sets Up New Centres For Hindu, Buddhist, And Jain Studies - All You Need To Know

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has launched three new centres to advance the vision of Vikasit Bharat by integrating Indian knowledge systems, according to a report by The Indian Express.

These new centres for Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain studies will now be part of the School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies.

Announcing the move, a social media post on X added, "This will take us on the path of integrating tradition with modernity, continuity with change, realm with region and myth with reality.”

The Executive Council of JNU approved the establishment of these centres during a meeting on 29 May.

A committee was formed by JNU to explore and recommend the implementation of the National Education Policy (2020) and the Indian Knowledge System within the university.

“The Executive Council in its meeting held on 29.05.2024 has approved the recommendation of the committee constituted to explore and recommend on NEP-2020 and Indian Knowledge System and its further implementation in the University, and establishing of following centres within the School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies,” read a notification dated 9 July.

Last year, Delhi University (DU) had also established a Centre for Hindu Studies, which currently offers a master’s degree and plans to introduce undergraduate courses.

Additionally, DU has a department for Buddhist Studies, and in March, it received government approval to establish a Centre for Advanced Studies in Buddhism with an estimated budget of Rs 35 crore.
