The committee of judges that conducted the in-house inquiry into allegations of cash being found at High Court Justice Yashwant Varma’s official residence submitted its report to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna on 4 May.
"The three-member Committee consisting of Mr Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana, Mr Justice G.S. Sandhawalia, Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh and Ms Justice Anu Sivaraman, Judge of the High Court of Karnataka, constituted for conducting an inquiry into the allegations against Mr Justice Yashwant Varma, a sitting Judge, has submitted its report dated 03.05.2025 to the Chief Justice of India on 04.05.2025," the Supreme Court stated in a press note.
The controversy erupted on 14 March after a blaze in the storage area of Justice Yashwant Varma's official home in the upscale Lutyens' Delhi neighborhood allegedly resulted in the unearthing of cash by fire and police officers.
A three-member committee was established on 22 March, by CJI Khanna, to investigate the discovery of "four to five semi-burnt sacks" of Indian currency.
At the time, Justice Varma was a sitting judge of the Delhi High Court. After the controversy, Justice Varma was transferred to the Allahabad High Court, his parent High Court.
Justice Varma vehemently refuted the accusations, asserting that neither he nor any of his family members had ever stored cash in the storeroom.
In his statement given to Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya of the Delhi High Court, Justice Varma expressed that the accusations of finding cash at his home seem to be a deliberate plot to falsely accuse and tarnish his reputation.
