  • India is now world's third-largest market in the aviation sector.
  • This growth is being driven by a growing economy, rising incomes, intense competition among airlines and a supportive policy environment.
  • According to Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Union Minister for Civil Aviation, the domestic traffic in the Indian aviation industry’s YoY (year-on-year) growth was 48.9 per cent.

In December 2021, domestic traffic reached 827,45,079 people. It grew to 1232,42,014 in December 2022.

“A 48.9 per cent yearly increase in domestic traffic highlights PM @narendramodi Ji’s approach of strengthening the sector through integral policy reforms, critical technology & strategic investment. Indian aviation is indeed leading the road to robust recovery,” tweeted Scindia.

    UDAN Scheme

India is the world's fastest-growing aviation market, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). India was the seventh largest aviation market with 187 million passengers (to, from and within India) in FY 2017-18.

India is now world's third-largest market in the aviation sector.

This growth is being driven by a growing economy, rising incomes, intense competition among airlines and a supportive policy environment.

The National Civil Aviation Policy(NCAP 2016) signalled the government’s intent to radically alter the sector’s growth trajectory.

NCAP’s flagship program – UDAN (regional connectivity scheme) is boosting the country's civil aviation and aviation infrastructure growth.

The UDAN scheme started in October 2016. In April 2017, the first flight from Shimla to Delhi under the UDAN scheme was flagged off by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The objective of the scheme is to connect small and medium cities with big cities through air service.
