The Karnataka cabinet has decided to introduce regulations aimed at curbing activities related to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh within government school and college premises. The move follows a letter from Information Technology and Biotechnology Minister Priyank Kharge to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah seeking restrictions on RSS activities and its affiliated organisations in government institutions and public spaces.
In his letter dated 4th October, Kharge alleged that the RSS has been conducting shakhas in government and government-aided schools, as well as on public grounds, where slogans are shouted and negative ideas are instilled in the minds of children and youth. He argued that such activities are contrary to India's unity and the spirit of the Constitution.
The government today re-released an old circular from February 2013 which forbids using government school grounds for private purposes or activities other than academic ones. Sources confirmed that the state government intends to use this circular to enforce restrictions on RSS activities within school premises.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed the Chief Secretary to review the action taken by the Tamil Nadu government regarding the ban on RSS activities in government spaces. Minister Kharge emphasised that educational institutions should remain neutral spaces focused solely on learning and welfare, with no organisation allowed to conduct activities that could influence or polarise students.
The decision has sparked political controversy, with Karnataka BJP president B Y Vijayendra dismissing the move, stating that the RSS is doing nation-building work selflessly. Home Minister G Parameshwara indicated that whilst the issue was not on today's cabinet meeting agenda, it could be discussed as an additional item.
