Kerala: PM Narendra Modi Conducts Aerial Survey Of Landslide-Affected Areas In Wayanad, Visits Disaster Site

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited Wayanad today (10 August) to assess the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts following the landslides in the Chooralmala and Mundakkai regions.

The Prime Minister arrived in Kannur at around 11 am, after which he conducted an aerial survey of the landslide-affected areas.

PM Modi was accompanied by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Governor Arif Mohammed and Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Tourism Suresh Gopi in an IAF helicopter.

During the aerial survey, he observed the origin of the landslide, which is at the source of the Iruvazhinji Puzha (river).

He also witnessed the worst-affected areas, including Punchirimattam, Mundakkai, and Chooralmala.

The aerial inspection was followed by a visit to the landslide sites at around 12.15 pm.

During his visit, PM Modi was briefed by rescue forces on the evacuation efforts and will oversee the rehabilitation work currently underway.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also welcomed PM's visit as on his X handle, stating, "Thank you, Modi ji, for visiting Wayanad to personally take stock of the terrible tragedy. This is a good decision."

In addition to visiting the landslide sites, the Prime Minister also stopped by a relief camp and a hospital to meet with victims and survivors of the disaster.

Later in the day, he will chair a review meeting with officials, where he will receive a detailed briefing on the incident and the ongoing relief efforts.

As per another report, the Kerala government has requested for Rs 2,000 crore in assistance for rehabilitation and relief work in the disaster-stricken region.

At least 226 people have perished and many remain missing for after landslides struck the region on 30 July in what is seen as one of the most severe natural disasters to have hit the southern state.
