After Delhi, Kochi Metro Rail is set to begin freight operations on its network, Indian Express reported.

This step aligns with the Centre’s directive to integrate cargo services into all metro networks nationwide.

In March this year, DMRC signed an MoU with Blue Dart for urban logistics.

Kochi Metro’s cargo initiative will be modelled on DMRC’s framework.

Freight services in Kochi will run during non-peak hours, carrying non-perishable packaged goods, ensuring that passenger convenience is not affected.

The initiative is expected to support local businesses, create extra revenue for KMRL, and enable quicker urban deliveries.

By shifting goods transport to the metro, the project aims to cut road dependency, ease city traffic, and lower vehicle emissions.

In a statement after inking the MoU with Blue Dart in March, the Delhi Metro had said that metro systems globally are increasingly exploring ways to utilize spare capacity to generate revenue while promoting sustainability.

It also gave example of Madrid Metro, which has initiated a pilot project in collaboration with logistic partners to transport parcels via metro trains, thereby reducing road traffic and pollution.

"DMRC is actively engaging with Madrid Metro to exchange insights and best practices in urban freight transportation,” the DMRC had said in the statement.

"By integrating first-mile and last-mile connectivity through metro-enabled logistics solutions and Micro Parcel Hubs, the project enhances supply chain efficiency while alleviating road congestion and urban pollution," the DMRC added.
