The BJP is set to convene a crucial legislature party meeting in Mumbai today (4 December) amid the ongoing deadlock over selecting Maharashtra's new Chief Minister.

This stalemate follows the Mahayuti's decisive victory in the state Assembly elections over the Maha Vikas Aghadi more than 10 days ago.

Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani have been appointed as central observers for the meeting, which is scheduled for 10 am.

The meeting comes a day before the swearing-in of the new Mahayuti government in Maharashtra, with the BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis expected to assume the Chief Minister's role.

Later in the day, Fadnavis, caretaker CM Eknath Shinde, and NCP leader Ajit Pawar will meet Governor C P Radhakrishnan to formally stake claim to form the Mahayuti 2.0 government.

Fadnavis visited Eknath Shinde at his residence in Mumbai on Tuesday (3 November) evening, marking their first face-to-face meeting since last week’s talks in Delhi regarding government formation.

The Shiv Sena chief has reportedly agreed to serve as Deputy Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, preparations for the swearing-in ceremony are underway at Mumbai's Azad Maidan, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi, 2,000 VVIPs, and around 40,000 supporters are expected to attend.

The Mahayuti secured a landslide victory in the Assembly elections held on 20 November, winning 230 out of 288 seats.

The BJP secured 132 seats, its highest-ever tally, while the Shiv Sena, led by Eknath Shinde, and Ajit Pawar's NCP won 57 and 41 seats, respectively.

Nirmala Sitharaman and Vijay Rupani have already arrived in Mumbai ahead of the meeting at the Vidhan Bhavan.

Later, Mahayuti leaders will meet Governor to hand over a letter of MLAs supporting them to stake claim to form the government.
