Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP-SP) Chief Sharad Pawar has expressed his support for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to lead the Opposition INDI Alliance, citing her capability and track record.

"Yes certainly (she is capable of leading the alliance), she is a prominent leader of this nation... she has that capability.. the elected leaders she sent in the parliament are responsible, dutiful and well aware people... therefore she has the right to say so...," NCP-SP chief Sharad Pawar said on Mamata Banerjee's statement, news agency ANI reported.

This comes after Banerjee earlier this week said in an interview that she could manage the dual responsibility of running the Opposition front while continuing her role as the West Bengal Chief Minister.

In an interview to News18 Bangla, Mamata said, “I had formed the INDIA bloc, now it is up to those leading the front to manage it. If they can’t run the show, what can I do? I would just say that everyone needs to be taken along".

Asked if she would take charge of the bloc, she said, “If given the opportunity, I would ensure its smooth functioning.”

In the interview, Mamata said she was up to managing the INDIA bloc along with her responsibilities as CM.

“I don’t want to go outside Bengal, but I can run it (the INDIA bloc) from here,” she said, Indian Express reported.

Her statement came amidst growing tensions within the INDI Alliance, driven by dissatisfaction among regional parties and recent electoral losses faced by Congress in Haryana and Maharashtra.
