Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Canada, the government said on Thursday (12 June) that the meeting would be an important opportunity to reset the strained relationship between the two countries, the Times of India reported.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Canada next week for the first time in nearly a decade.
He has received an invitation to attend the G7 Summit at Kananaskis from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The two leaders are scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting on the summit's sidelines.
"We believe that the forthcoming meeting between the two leaders on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Kananaskis in Canada will offer an important opportunity for them to exchange views on bilateral and global issues and explore pathways to set or reset the relationship based on mutual respect, shared interests, and sensitivity to each other's concerns," said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
Ties between India and Canada had deteriorated sharply under former prime minister Justin Trudeau, particularly after his public allegations linking Indian officials to the killing of Canadian national and Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said there are existing mechanisms between Indian and Canadian law enforcement agencies.
These mechanisms, he explained, have been used to discuss issues of mutual security concern over some time.
“This engagement is likely to continue," he added.
Jaiswal also noted that Modi and Carney had a phone conversation last week.
During the call, the two leaders discussed the future of the India-Canada relationship.
He described India and Canada as vibrant democracies.
According to him, both nations are bound by shared democratic values, a strong commitment to the rule of law, and close people-to-people ties.
