A 550 metre-long and 11 metre-wide vehicular underpass, part of the ambitious Mumbai Coastal Road project, is set to become operational by May, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Indian Express reported.
This underpass, the only one in the 10.58 km corridor, is designed to serve motorists commuting from Dadar and Prabhadevi towards the coastal road, streamlining traffic and reducing congestion in Worli.
BMC officials stated that the underpass has been designed with future traffic needs in mind. It will offer seamless connectivity from the Sewri-Worli elevated corridor to either the western suburbs or South Mumbai.
“This underpass will complete the last missing link of the coastal road. The ongoing works are in the final stages and they will be completed by early May, soon after which we intend to open the underpass for motorists,” a BMC official was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.
“Once this tunnel is opened, motorists coming from Dadar can enter the coastal road directly, without having them exited from the Worli or Haji Ali interchanges,” the official added.
The underpass runs beneath Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road, linking J K Kapur Chowk to the coastal road through the vehicular interchange at Bindoo Madhav Thackeray Chowk at Worli Sea Face.
Currently, ancillary works such as painting lane markings, installing lights, and surfacing the sidewalls are underway, which are expected to be completed within the next few weeks.
The tunnel will exclusively accommodate southbound traffic from Dadar and Prabhadevi, offering two route options—towards Bandra or Marine Drive/Nariman Point.
The fully operational Mumbai Coastal Road already connects Nariman Point to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, and this underpass is expected to significantly bolster the city’s east-west connectivity.
