Mumbai’s much-awaited Metro Line 3 continues its expansion with the BKC-Worli stretch receiving the all-clear from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety on Monday (5 May), marking the final milestone before its commissioning.

Services on the newly approved section are scheduled to commence on Saturday (10 May), following the formal inauguration today (9 May), Times of India reported.

This development comes as the city’s underground corridor, aimed at easing the immense pressure on roadways and the overburdened suburban rail network, extends to 22 km.

The BKC-Worli section alone promises to cut down the travel time between these two busy hubs to just 36 minutes. The line now passes through critical urban zones including Dharavi, Dadar, and Siddhivinayak.

The inauguration, originally expected to be done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will proceed without his presence.

"We anticipated the PM's presence at the inauguration, but due to India's ongoing action against Pakistan, his participation was not feasible," a senior state government official was quoted as saying by ToI.

Since the launch of the Aarey-BKC phase in October 2024, Metro Line 3 has seen a daily ridership average of 25,000. Authorities expect that figure to rise significantly with the southern extension covering densely populated commercial and residential areas.

Planners note that while the Dadar Metro station is situated about a kilometre from the existing suburban railway node, its positioning within the larger Metro network will boost interconnectivity and ease of access.

The BKC-Worli leg is poised to improve commute efficiency between key employment clusters.

Key engineering feats achieved during construction include the challenging tunnelling beneath the Mithi River.

Operational crossovers at Acharya Atre Chowk and CSMT were also introduced to optimise service frequency and train flow.

The line, though not officially interlinked, shares informal junctions with Metro 2A, Metro 7, and Metro 1, thereby forming an integrated transit web across Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs.
