The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has successfully launched a massive 65 metre composite steel girder near the Bhayandar West Road Over Bridge (ROB), a pivotal engineering milestone in the development of Metro Line-9.

Executed with precise coordination between Western Railway, Konkan Railway and local traffic authorities, the launch was carried out within tight night block windows on 7, 8 and 11 June 2025, The Free Press Journal reported.

The girder, weighing close to 700 metric tonnes and spanning 9.575 metres in width, was assembled in three segments of approximately 235 metric tonnes each.

The deployment of 600MT and 750MT cranes, with an additional 600MT on standby, ensured the complex operation was completed seamlessly despite the challenging site conditions above the Western Railway tracks.

Metro Line-9 is part of Mumbai’s first-ever double-decker infrastructure, where the metro viaduct will be stacked above a vehicular flyover. The project spans 10.54 km with eight elevated stations and currently stands at 95 per cent completion.

The first phase from Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon is already undergoing trial runs and covers 4.4 km with four stations: Dahisar (East), Pandurangwadi, Miragaon and Kashigaon.

Once fully operational, Line-9 will transform connectivity across the western suburbs by directly linking Mira-Bhayandar to crucial transit points.

These include Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (via Lines 7 and 7A), Andheri (West) via Line 2B, and Ghatkopar through Lines 7 and 1. Future integration with Line-10 will provide access to Thane, while Line-13 will extend the corridor up to Vasai-Virar.

Phase I is targeted for completion by December 2025, with Phase II extending up to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose (NSCB) station and is slated for a December 2026 launch.
