The widening of the stretch of the Nagpur-Jabalpur National Highway in the suburbs of Nagpur has been approved during a meeting chaired by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari.

The decision was taken during the high-level review meeting held on Saturday (12 July), a Maharashtra government statement said.

Due to heavy encroachment, the existing road had narrowed to just 7 metres in Kamptee, a Nagpur suburb, leading to repeated traffic snarls.

The road will now be expanded to 18 metres, as per records from a 1912-13 survey, paving the way for smoother traffic flow.

Authorities, including the district administration, municipal council, and metro officials, have been instructed to carry out joint efforts to clear encroachments.

This plan is expected not only to alleviate congestion but also to drive local development.

As part of broader urban renewal, the meeting approved the construction of an expansive commercial complex.

The proposed complex will adjoin the Kamptee railway station, near the bus stop, municipal council, and tehsil office.

Several other key infrastructure projects were also discussed and approved in the meeting, including granting National Highway status to the Kharangana-Vadchicholi road and allocating funds for the Mauda-Kuhi State Highway.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for extending the National Highway from Karanja, Washim district up to the Madhya Pradesh border also received approval.

Plans were set in motion for constructing a road from Koradi Naka to Orchid School, connecting it to the under-construction flyover on the Nagpur-Chhindwara National Highway.

Additionally, funds have been sanctioned for building a ropeway between Shri Mahadev Tekdi and the 151-foot-tall Hanuman Mandir under the Shri Koradi Mahalaxmi Temple development project.

Further urban plans include a metro station near Dragon Palace in Kamptee and transforming Neelam Lawn and the Friday Market area into a vibrant urban hub, blending public facilities with commercial ventures such as a food court and mall, while retaining 30 per cent of land for local residents’ rehabilitation.
