The 71st National Film Awards were presented on Tuesday (23 September) at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, by President Droupadi Murmu, recognising outstanding contributions to Indian cinema for films released in 2023, NDTV reported.
In addition to the acting awards, veteran actor Mohanlal was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his lifetime contribution to Indian cinema.
Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, and Vikrant Massey received the top acting honours, marking their first National Awards.
Shah Rukh Khan and Vikrant Massey shared the Best Actor award for their performances in Jawan and 12th Fail, respectively.
Rani Mukerji was named Best Actress for her role in Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway.
In Jawan, directed by Atlee, Shah Rukh Khan portrayed a character addressing social issues, including unemployment and farmers’ suicides. The film, one of the highest-grossing Hindi releases in recent years, earned over Rs 1,000 crore at the box office.
Rani Mukerji’s performance in Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway depicted the struggle of an Indian mother whose children were taken away by Norwegian authorities in 2011.
Vikrant Massey received recognition for his role in 12th Fail, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, based on the life of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma. The film, produced on a budget of Rs 20 crore, achieved commercial success with a box office collection of Rs 69.64 crore.
