In a new video shared by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) West Bengal president Sukanta Majumdar, Jayant Singh, a Trinamool strongman, and his aides are seen brutally beating a woman at a local club in Kamarhati, North 24 Parganas district.

The video shows Singh, wearing a white scarf on his head while his men hold a woman by her hands and legs as they beat her with sticks. Singh is heard ordering his aides to hit her on the back as she screams in pain.

Earlier this month, Singh, who is also the main accused in the Ariadaha mob assault case, was arrested after surrendering to the police on 4 July.

Singh allegedly led an attack on Sayandip Panja, a college student, and his mother in Ariadaha, Kamarhati. Identified through CCTV footage, Singh surrendered four days after the incident. The police have also arrested nine others linked to the case.

"Absolutely appalled by the emerging video from Taltala Club, Kamarhati, showing Jayanta Singh, a close associate of TMC MLA Madan Mitra, brutally attacking a girl. This heinous act under a government that claims to champion women’s rights is a disgrace to humanity," Sukanta Majumder, Balurghat MP, posted on his X handle.

According to a report from The Indian Express, the incident occurred in March 2021. Recently, the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) dispensation has come under fire for spike in incidents of mob lynchings in Bengal — over a dozen reported since June.

While the local TMC MLA Madan Mitra could not be contacted for comments, several other party leaders condemned the incident and accused the BJP of targeting the party.

"This is an old video from March 2021. The accused is Jayant Singh and his associates. Two persons seen in the video are currently in jail. The victim in the video may be a male. This is being verified. It is obvious that the BJP, after being rejected in Bengal, is using all kinds of videos to target TMC and defame the state," Riju Dutta, a TMC spokesperson also shared on X.
