Odisha is set for a major expansion in aviation infrastructure with several key projects announced by Union Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu at the Eastern Region Ministerial Conference on Civil Aviation in Bhubaneswar.
The Minister confirmed that Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar will soon have a third terminal to accommodate growing passenger numbers, Odisha TV reported.
“Terminal 3 is in planning stage now. It brings me happiness to say the work is going to get started soon. We will try to make a nice architectural building which showcases the history and legacy of Odisha. We will try to make into ground level as soon as possible,” he was quoted as saying by Odisha TV.
The terminal will incorporate elements of Odisha’s art, culture and heritage.
A major highlight of the announcement was the upcoming greenfield airport in Puri, which will be named Jagannath Airport.
Naidu confirmed that all necessary approvals have been granted, ensuring the project will move forward without delay.
In a move to enhance regional connectivity, the government also plans to revive 20 non-functional airstrips across the state.
At the same time, Odisha has put forward proposals for heli-taxi services in remote and hilly regions, alongside seaplane operations in Chilika Lake.
The seaplane operations and heli-taxi initiatives are expected to strengthen tourism, providing a unique draw for both domestic and international visitors.
Naidu also placed these initiatives in the context of the broader ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision, under which India aims to develop 350 new airports by 2047.
The conference, attended by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Muralidhar Mohol, and representatives from West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Jharkhand, focused on ways to strengthen airport infrastructure and passenger traffic across eastern India.
