Hours after Iran’s parliament passed a motion in support of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday (22 June), India's Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri assured 'stability' in our fuel supplies.
Notably, the motion was approved in Iran's parliament after the United States' airstrikes at the Muslim nation's nuclear facilities, as a mark of retaliation, but it needs Iran’s Supreme National Security Council's approval for implementation.
Thus, the decision on closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which is a crucial part of the world's oil routes, is not final yet. Nonetheless, India is 'closely monitoring the evolving geopolitical situation in the Middle East,' as Puri said.
In a post on X, he wrote, "Under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi Ji, we have diversified our supplies in the past few years and a large volume of our supplies do not come through the Strait of Hormuz now."
"Our Oil Marketing Companies have supplies of several weeks and continue to receive energy supplies from several routes. We will take all necessary steps to ensure stability of supplies of fuel to our citizens," Puri further assured.
The post was in response to concerns about how Iran's possible move might affect India's crude oil supplies. Notably, India fulfills nearly 85 per cent of its crude requirements from imports and nearly half of it comes through Strait of Hormuz, as per reports.
