The Union Railway Minister announced a significant milestone in India’s high-speed transport aspirations with the completion of a 410-metre Hyperloop test track at IIT Madras' Discovery Campus in Thaiyur.
The test track is a collaborative effort involving Indian Railways, IIT-Madras’ Avishkar Hyperloop team, and TuTr Hyperloop, a startup incubated at the institute.
The Union Minister captioned the post, “Bharat’s first Hyperloop test track (410 meters) completed,” applauding the team for their groundbreaking work and expressing optimism about India’s potential to realize the futuristic technology.
According to a release, the Hyperloop team aims to advance and commercialise Hyperloop technologies for high-speed, affordable, reliable, and sustainable transportation. India’s Ministry of Railways is playing a pivotal role in this innovation-driven partnership at IIT Madras.
The test track’s initial run achieved speeds of 100 km/h. Future tests on a longer track will aim for speeds of up to 600 km/h, bringing India closer to realizing a fully operational Hyperloop system, reports Mint.
If successful, the Hyperloop system could revolutionise India’s transportation landscape by supplementing or complementing the country’s existing Metro Rail networks. The technology promises ultra-fast, sustainable travel between cities, potentially reshaping how people and goods move across the country.
