On Sunday (11 August), Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced 109 high-yielding, climate-resilient, and bio-fortified seed varieties of agricultural and horticultural crops, aiming to boost farm productivity and increase farmers' incomes.

These seed varieties, developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), cover 61 different crops, including 34 field crops and 27 horticultural crops.

The Prime Minister unveiled the seeds at three experimental agricultural plots at Delhi's Pusa Campus, where he also engaged with farmers and scientists, as per a report by The Hindu.

The field crop varieties include cereals, millets, forage crops, oilseeds, pulses, sugarcane, cotton, and fiber crops. In the horticultural sector, new varieties of fruits, vegetables, plantation crops, tubers, spices, flowers, and medicinal plants were released.

Since 2014, Prime Minister Modi has been advocating sustainable farming practices and climate-resilient approaches to increase farmers' incomes.

He has consistently promoted bio-fortified crop varieties, linking them to government programs such as the Mid-Day Meal scheme and Anganwadi services to address malnutrition in India.
