UP government is considering replacing the previously planned Metrolite project with a full-fledged Metro system to address Prayagraj’s growing population and rising traffic congestion, as per a Times of India report.

The proposed 44 km metro network will span two routes with 39 stations. The first route, from Bamrauli to Jhunsi City Lake, will cover 23 km with 20 stations, while the second, from Shantipuram to Chheoki, will extend 21 km with 19 stations.

A central interchange at Parade Ground will connect the two routes for seamless transfers. The project’s estimated cost is Rs 10,000 crore, up from Rs 8,747 crore for the Metrolite. The DPR is expected post-Diwali, with route inspections planned soon.

Officials from the Prayagraj Development Authority and UPMRC confirmed the Metro will follow the previously identified routes. Three-coach trains will carry over 1,200 passengers, enhancing efficiency and reducing congestion and pollution.

A 30-member Metro Council will oversee land acquisition across 100 villages, with farmers compensated at four times the prevailing circle rate.

The project has evolved considerably since the state government allocated Rs 175 crore in its 2019 budget for preliminary works.

Rail India Technical and Economic Service prepared a detailed project report, which was submitted to the Prayagraj Development Authority in March 2019.

Metrolite systems are designed for cities with lower ridership requirements and operate at reduced costs compared to conventional metro networks.

The proposal reflects considerations about passenger demand, particularly given Prayagraj's religious significance and its role hosting the Maha Kumbh Mela.
