Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam has announced that PM Narendra Modi will attend Mauritius’ National Day celebrations next month as the guest of honour.

Speaking in the Mauritius National Assembly on Friday (21 February), Ramgoolam said it is indeed a singular privilege for our country to host such a distinguished personality despite his very tight schedule, PTI reported.

"I have great pleasure to inform the House that following my invitation, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, has kindly agreed to be the Guest of Honour for our National Day celebrations," Ramgoolam said.

"It is indeed a singular privilege for our country, to host such a distinguished personality who is doing us this honour, inspite of his very tight schedule and inspite of his recent visits to Paris and the United States," he added.

The Mauritius PM added that the visit of PM Modi is a "testimony of close relations" between the two countries.

"He has agreed to be here as our special guest. The visit of Modi is a testimony of the close relations between our two nations," Ramgoolam said.

Mauritius celebrates its National Day annually on 12 March, marking its independence from British colonial rule in 1968.

Last year, President Droupadi Murmu attended Mauritius’ National Day celebrations as the chief guest.
