Russian President Vladimir Putin has credited US President Donald Trump for thaw in ties between the two countries.

Speaking at a press conference in Minsk on Friday (27 June), Putin said, “In general, thanks to President Trump, relations between Russia and the United States are beginning to level out in some ways. Not everything has been decided in the sphere of diplomatic relations, but the first steps have been taken, and we are moving forward.”

According to a report by India Today , Putin also expressed “great respect” for Trump and indicated willingness to meet him.

Trump responded positively, calling Putin’s remarks “very nice” and remarking, “He respects our country again. He didn’t respect it a year agoI can tell you that,” while addressing reporters at the White House.

Despite tensions over Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, with Trump previously calling Putin “absolutely crazy”, both leaders appear to be advocating for a reset in diplomatic ties.

This development follows a recent phone call between the two, during which they reportedly discussed Ukraine and the Israel-Iran conflict.

Putin also declared Moscow’s readiness for a new round of peace talks with Ukraine, potentially in Istanbul.

Putin said negotiators from both sides remained in regular contact.

He further stated that Russia is willing to return the bodies of 3,000 Ukrainian soldiers as a humanitarian gesture.

Trump, for his part, said he believes the conflict may “get settled” soon, citing his recent conversation with Putin as a sign of potential movement.
