Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang announced that the long-awaited railway line linking Siliguri (Sevok) in West Bengal to Sikkim is on track for completion by 2027, reported ANI.
Alongside the railway development, Tamang unveiled plans for the construction of the Melli to Singtam Highway. This key route will further strengthen Sikkim’s internal transport infrastructure, facilitating smoother travel within the state.
Maintenance work on National Highway 10, a crucial arterial route for Sikkim is currently in progress. Upon its completion, the travel time between Siliguri and Sikkim is anticipated to be reduced to just two hours, marking a substantial improvement in road connectivity.
In parallel, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has made notable advances in infrastructure upgrades across the northeastern states.
Between April 2024 and March 2025, the NFR constructed 11 Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and 26 Road Under Bridges (RUBs) as part of its broader strategy to minimise delays and streamline road-rail integration.
As part of safety and efficiency enhancements, 28 manned level crossings (MLCs) were eliminated during this period. This was achieved through a combination of new ROBs, RUBs, Low Height Subways (LHS), direct closures, and diversions.
These interventions were executed with the involvement of agencies such as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Railway Divisions, Construction Wings, and Deposit Agencies, in coordination with State Governments.
