Sanjay Roy, who previously served as a civic volunteer for the Kolkata Police, was found guilty of rape and murder of the 31-year-old trainee doctor at the R G Kar medical college and hospital.
After the Sealdah court pronounced the verdict on Saturday (18 January), the victim's father emotionally broke down in tears. This verdict was delivered over five months after the appalling event that had left the whole country in a state of shock.
Conviction was granted according to Section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and murder under Sections 66 and 103(1). The date set for the sentencing is Monday.
The victim was discovered semi-clothed and deceased on the third level of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on 9 August of the previous year. Roy was apprehended the day following the gruesome discovery.
When the verdict was announced by Anirban Das, the extra district and sessions judge, the victim's father, filled with emotion, expressed his gratitude to the judge for maintaining his trust in the judicial system.
Sanjay Roy pleaded with the judge, claiming he was wrongly accused in the case. "I have not done this. Those who have done this are being let go. I have been falsely implicated," he told the court.
"I always wear a chain of rudraksh on my neck. If I had committed the crime, my chain would have been broken in place of occurrence. I can't commit this crime," he added.
Justice Das, however, stated that the next hearing for the accused will be on Monday. The accused has been sent to judicial custody before the punishment is announced at 12:30 pm on Monday.
Other accused
In November 2024, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) submitted a chargesheet related to fiscal discrepancies at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The probe was launched in response to a directive from the Calcutta High Court.
The indictment listed former principal of RG Kar, Sandip Ghosh, along with others such as Dr Ashish Kumar Pandey, Biplab Singha, Suman Hazra, and Afsar Ali Khan, citing their participation in financial malfeasance.
Beyond the corruption allegations, Sandip Ghosh was also interrogated about the murder case. The CBI carried out lie detector tests on him as a component of their investigation. The postponement in submitting the chargesheet led to the accused, Abhijit Mondal and Sandip Ghosh among them, being awarded bail.
