Gujarat is witnessing a rapid transformation in rail infrastructure with 36 railway projects underway, involving an investment of Rs 30,275 crore, the Ministry of Railways informed Parliament on Wednesday (6 August).
These include six new lines, 17 gauge conversion projects, and 13 doubling/multitracking works.
As of March 2025, 863 km of new railway lines have been commissioned and Rs 12,865 crore spent.
Key completed projects include Ahmedabad-Botad and Dhasa-Jetalsar gauge conversions and Surendranagar-Rajkot doubling.
"As on 01.04.2025, 36 projects (6 New Lines, 17 Gauge Conversion and
13 Doubling), of a total length of 2564 Km, costing ₹30,275 crore,
falling fully/partly in the State of Gujarat, are sanctioned, out of which
863 Km length has been commissioned and an expenditure of ₹12,865
crore has been incurred upto March 2025," Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishaw said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
Gujarat hosts 565 route-km of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), all of which has been commissioned.
Meanwhile, work on the 508 km Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project has gathered pace.
The government stated that 100 per cent land acquisition is complete in Gujarat, and 352 km of viaducts have been built, along with 329 km of girder casting and 309 km of launching.
The Ahmedabad Metro Phase I is fully operational (40 km), and Phase II (28 km) has 23 km operational, with Surat Metro (40 km) under construction.
The Rajkot Metro proposal for a 41 km corridor worth Rs 10,427 crore has received in-principle approval from the Gujarat government and awaits central appraisal.
The government highlighted that all new projects are planned with electrification and minimal environmental impact.
The entire Broad Gauge network in Gujarat has been electrified.
Additionally, projects are being integrated under the PM Gati Shakti Master Plan to ensure efficiency and faster clearances.
From 2009–14, Gujarat saw 132 km/year of new tracks commissioned. This jumped to 251 km/year from 2014–25.
Budget outlay for Gujarat’s railway projects rose from Rs 589 crore annually (2009–14) to Rs 17,155 crore in 2025–26 — a 29x increase.
Among the high-value ongoing works are:
Luni-Samdari-Bhildi Doubling (272 km, Rs 3,086 crore)
Barejadi–Sanand 4th Line (38 km, Rs 962 crore)
Samakhiali–Gandhidham Quadrupling (53 km, Rs 1,430 crore)
In the last three years, 58 new surveys covering 6,321 km were sanctioned in Gujarat. These include studies for the Ratlam–Vadodara third and fourth lines and Viramgam–Kanalus quadrupling.
