The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday (23 April) dropped incumbent Ladakh MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal and fielded Tashi Gyalson for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Namgyal became famous for his speech supporting the Modi government's decision to repeal Article 370 and make Ladakh a separate Union Territory where he said, "Sunne ki kshamta rakhiye (be capable to listen)" on being interrupted.

Namgyal had targeted the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for keeping Ladakh together with Jammu and Kashmir and blamed the decision for the non-development of the now UT.

However, dropping Namgyal, the BJP fielded Gyalson who is the chairman and chief executive councilor of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council in Leh.

According to Indian Express sources, the BJP found Gyalson more capable of keeping the party's hold over the seat, which is headed for polls on 20 May.

Ladakh sends lone MP to Lok Sabha. The constituency includes Kargil district, which has a Muslim-majority and Leh district, which has a predominant Buddhist population.
