The Tamil Nadu government has authorised preparatory works worth Rs 2,442 crore for the proposed 21.76 km metro rail line between Koyambedu and Pattabhiram, signaling its intention to move ahead with the project even as it awaits Union government approval, according to a New Indian Express report.
The sanction primarily covers land acquisition costs estimated at Rs 2,204 crore, alongside preparatory activities such as shifting utilities, conducting surveys, replanting trees, and managing traffic diversions.
Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) has been permitted to start preliminary planning, including route mapping and diversion strategies, in anticipation of central clearance.
Estimated at Rs 9,928 crore under 2025 projections, the corridor is aimed at easing congestion along the Outer Ring Road, one of Chennai’s busiest transport spines.
The state has sought Centre’s approval under an equity-sharing model, while also looking to secure assistance from bilateral and multilateral financing agencies.
Officials said the corridor is intended as a development catalyst for Chennai’s north-western suburbs, with the line set to terminate at Pattabhiram.
Chief Minister M K Stalin recently inaugurated a Rs 330 crore Tidel IT Park there, the third such hub in Tamil Nadu after Taramani and Coimbatore seen as a potential driver of the region’s economic transformation.
The metro alignment is expected to integrate with emerging residential and commercial clusters across Thirumazhisai, Ambattur, Kundrathur, Tiruvallur, Avadi, and Poonamallee.
With interchange points planned at Avadi railway station and Ambattur bus terminus, the link is designed to enhance connectivity, shorten commutes, and widen access to jobs.
If approved by the Centre, the extension will add 19 elevated stations to the city’s growing network.
A Detailed Project Report submitted in February stresses transit-oriented planning to integrate land use with transport.
