Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy assured Tollywood actors and filmmakers on Thursday (26 December) that his government supports the Telugu film industry while emphasizing that there would be no compromise on law and order.
The meeting, held at the Telangana State Police Command and Control Centre in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, comes amid tensions between the state government and the film industry following the arrest of Pushpa 2 actor Allu Arjun.
A delegation led by Telangana Film Development Corporation (FDC) chairman Dil Raju included prominent actors such as Nagarjuna, Varun Tej, Sai Dharam Tej, Kalyan Ram, and Venkatesh, as well as directors Koratala Siva, Anil Ravipudi, and producers Suresh Babu and Allu Aravind.
“Celebrities must control their fans, and the industry must be responsible,” Reddy said during the meeting, as reported by ANI citing unnamed sources.
The controversy began on December 4 during the premiere of Pushpa 2: The Rule at Sandhya Theatre in Hyderabad, where a massive crowd gathered to see Allu Arjun.
Chaos erupted when the actor waved to fans from the sunroof of his car, resulting in a stampede that tragically claimed the life of a 35-year-old woman and injured her eight-year-old child.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy criticized the actor, stating in the Assembly that the Hyderabad police had denied permission for any event at the venue due to safety concerns. “The roadshow and waving to crowds led to the tragic incident,” Reddy said.
Allu Arjun refuted the allegations, describing the incident as “purely accidental” and calling the claims against him an attempt at “character assassination.” The actor also clarified that it was not a procession or roadshow.
The Hyderabad police arrested Allu Arjun on December 13 in connection with the incident. He was granted interim bail by the Telangana High Court the next day after furnishing a Rs 50,000 bond.
