Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Saturday (24 May) announced that tenders for the first phase of Bengaluru’s ambitious Tunnel Road project will be floated shortly, following Cabinet approval for its construction in two phases, The New Indian Express reported.
Addressing the media after a high-level meeting with officials, Shivakumar said, “A meeting was held with Greater Bangalore Authority (GBA) officials, DGP of the Police Department, IGP and Traffic Police Department officials before calling tenders for this project with the aim of avoiding traffic congestion at the entry and exit points of the Tunnel Road in Bengaluru.”
He further clarified, “No exit will be allowed anywhere within one km of the Vidhan Soudha. Traffic jams happen everywhere here. So I have instructed the police officers to check this.”
The project is part of a broader infrastructure push that also includes the proposed 114 km elevated corridor in the city.
A 114 km elevated corridor is set to be constructed in Bengaluru, and traffic police officials have been consulted for their input on the project.
Shivakumar also outlined a major overhaul of Bengaluru's waste management system. The government plans to introduce 33 separate contracts for garbage disposal, with each package designated for one of the city's large constituencies.
The project, recently approved by the cabinet, is valued at approximately Rs 4,000 crore, and tenders will be floated for a contract period of seven years.
