Elon Musk’s Tesla officially entered the Indian market with the launch of the Model Y on 15 July, and deliveries began by September, marking the company’s first customer rollouts within two months of launch, NDTV reported.

By the month’s end, Tesla had delivered 60 Model Y units—a modest figure, but a significant start for a brand offering only one model in India, NDTV reported.

As per Vahan data, BMW led India’s luxury EV segment with 307 units, followed by Mercedes-Benz at 95 and Volvo at 22.

Against this backdrop, Tesla’s 60 Model Y deliveries, priced around Rs 60 lakh (ex-showroom), position the American EV maker within competitive range of its European counterparts.

Tesla offers the Model Y in two variants — Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and Long Range RWD — with WLTP-certified ranges of 500 km and 622 km, respectively.

The SUV starts at Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Currently, only the RWD variant is being delivered, with the Long Range version expected to follow soon.

Bookings for the Model Y opened alongside its July debut, drawing over 600 confirmed orders so far.

The figure, however, reportedly falls short of Tesla’s internal projection.

The company, which initially planned to utilise its full import quota of 2,500 units, is now revising its targets downward to between 350 and 500 deliveries for 2025 amid slower-than-expected demand.
