The Thiruvananthapuram International Airport in Kerala is set for a major upgrade, with phase one of its expansion scheduled to begin by the end of this year.
The first phase, valued at Rs 1,300 crore, is aimed at reducing congestion, streamlining operations and significantly increasing passenger handling capacity, according to a News18 report.
Currently, the airport operates two terminals – T1 and T2 with a combined annual capacity of 4.5 million passengers.
However, between 2024 and 2025, footfall reached 4.9 million, already surpassing its designed limit. Officials confirmed that expansion work on T2 will commence in November 2025.
“Keeping passenger convenience in mind, the terminal will be operational throughout and expansion will be carried out in parts. The terminal will not be shut completely at any time and operations will continue. This is why it is estimated to take five years for completion," a senior airport official was quoted as saying.
"Once the expansion is complete, the total capacity of both terminals together will go up to 27 million passengers per annum, five times the present capacity,” he added.
Beyond terminal expansion, significant improvements are also planned on the airside. The current 3.4 km runway will be extended by 145 metres at both ends to comply with DGCA safety requirements.
The airport, which now manages 85 daily air traffic movements and serves 14 international and nine domestic destinations, will also see additional taxiways to accommodate more flights and expand connectivity.
Phase one also includes a new apron building and upgraded infrastructure, such as drainage systems. Longer-term plans outlined in the airport’s Rs 8,707 crore masterplan feature a new air traffic control tower and expansion of T1.
