Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) leader MH Jawahirullah has apologised for a poster hurting Hindu religious sentiments.
The poster was erected by party members in Batlagundu of Dindigul district to condemn an incident in which two women were sexually assaulted and paraded naked in Manipur.
In the poster, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have been depicted as Lord Rama and Lord Lakshmana. They are standing on either side of Goddess Sita, who has been shown as a naked woman, whose private parts have been covered with the tricolour.
An FIR has been filed in the matter on a complaint by Hindu Munnani.
In a video statement to ANI, Jawahirullah said that disciplinary action has been taken against those who put up the poster and the party did not intend to hurt the sentiments of Hindus.
The MMK is a part of the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
The incident had come to light around the time well-known publisher and political commentator Badri Seshadri was arrested for his comments criticising the Chief Justice of India's remarks regarding the Manipur violence.
Seshadri was booked under Sections 153 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 153 A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony and 505 (Statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
