Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday (1 September) assured that her government would soon deliver on the much-awaited demand for concessional metro passes for students in Delhi.
Speaking at Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad’s (ABVP) annual event Swayamsiddha 2025 at Delhi University’s Sports Complex, Gupta was quoted as saying that, “The metro passes have not been provided until now… this Delhi government will make that happen soon. We will definitely provide our students with the facility,” Indian Express reported.
With Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections approaching, where ABVP, NSUI, AISA and SFI are key contenders, the Chief Minister drew on her own journey from student activism to politics.
A former president of DUSU herself, she credited ABVP with shaping her career, noting that it offered her the first platform of her life.
She recalled joining ABVP during her days at Daulat Ram College, participating in a month-long strike that introduced her to DUSU and the power of student activism.
“Joining a cause means joining ABVP,” she told students, urging them to use their college years to pursue purposeful work.
Gupta also addressed the recent revival of the University-Special bus service, popularly known as U-Special, saying her government would strengthen the service further.
“I want the number of U-Special buses to increase. This CM will make it happen for you,” she said, highlighting the importance of reliable student transport.
Swayamsiddha, an annual ABVP programme celebrating women achievers, was attended by ABVP’s National Girls’ In-Charge Manu Sharma Kataria, National Secretary Shivangi Kharwal, DUSU office bearers, professors, and students.
