Train Sabotage Attempts On The Rise: LPG Cylinder Found On Railway Tracks In UP's Kanpur

A major train accident was averted early Sunday (22 September) after an LPG cylinder was found lying on the railway tracks near Perambur Railway Station in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district.

The cylinder was detected in front of a goods train, leading the loco pilot to swiftly apply the brakes.

According to the police, the incident occurred at 8:10 am when the train was going to Allahabad from Kanpur.

"It was found that the cylinder was of five litre capacity and empty. It was removed from the track. The matter is being investigated," a statement issued by the local police said, news agency PTI reported.

This is the fourth such incident in September where unidentified miscreants have attempted to derail trains.

On 8 September, the Kalindi Express, travelling from Prayagraj to Bhiwani, struck an LPG cylinder placed on the tracks in Kanpur.

The train halted after hitting the cylinder, and the loco pilot also noticed other suspicious items, including a petrol bottle and matchboxes.

On 10 September, the Indian Railways said that there have been 18 attempts to derail trains nationwide since August, India Today reported.

With the latest attempt in Kanpur, the number of incidents has risen to 19.

Since June 2023, a total of 24 such incidents have occurred, with objects like LPG cylinders, bicycles, iron rods, and cement blocks being found on rail tracks.

According to the Railways, of the 19 incidents, 15 took place in August and four in September, including the latest train derailment attempt in Kanpur.
