US President Donald Trump praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a "very good friend" on Tuesday (14 October) during the Gaza peace summit in Egypt's Sharm el-Sheikh, whilst addressing world leaders gathered to mark the implementation of a US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, PTI reported.
Though PM Modi did not attend the summit, Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh was sent as India's representative.
Addressing the summit alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and more than 20 world leaders, Trump stated that "India is a great country with a very good friend of mine at the top."
Trump expressed optimism, stating, “India and Pakistan will live very nicely together,” while glancing at Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif, who responded with a chuckle.
Earlier, Trump praised Sharif and Pakistan Army Chief Gen Asim Munir, inviting Sharif to address the gathering.
Sharif boasted about Trump’s “untiring and relentless efforts” for Middle East peace.
“Pakistan had nominated President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his outstanding (and) extraordinary contributions to first stop the war between India and Pakistan and then achieve a ceasefire along with his very wonderful team,” he said.
Sharif said he would like to nominate Trump again for the Nobel Peace Prize for “saving millions of lives not only in South Asia but also in the Middle East”.
The Gaza summit, held following the release of 20 living Israeli hostages and approximately 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, brought together leaders from Europe, the Middle East and Asia to sign agreements backing Trump's peace plan.
The ceasefire marks the first phase of ending a two-year conflict that resulted in significant casualties in Gaza. Trump earlier visited Jerusalem to address the Knesset before travelling to the Egyptian resort city.
New Delhi reaffirmed support for Trump's Gaza peace plan and its long-standing position backing a negotiated two-state solution.
