US President Donald Trump on Saturday (25 October) announced an additional 10 per cent tariff on Canadian imports, saying the hike would be charged “over and above what they’re paying now", India Today reported.

The escalation follows his abrupt termination of trade talks with Ottawa two days earlier over an alleged misleading Canadian advertisement.

The announcement came via Trump’s Truth Social account, referencing an Ontario government advertisement aired during Game 1 of the World Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers.

The ad featured late US president Ronald Reagan warning that tariffs could trigger trade wars and economic pain.

Calling the ad a “serious misrepresentation of facts and hostile act,” Trump said he would raise tariffs on Canada by an extra 10 per cent.

Trump described the advertisement as “fraudulent,” accusing Ottawa of manipulating Reagan’s 1987 address.

Citing the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation, he said the ad used “selective audio and video” without permission and misrepresented Reagan’s words.

The Foundation confirmed it was “reviewing legal options” over the unauthorized edit.

Trump alleged that Canada’s motive was to sway the US Supreme Court in its tariff disputes.

The latest hike adds to a series of tariff battles between Washington and Ottawa.

Earlier this year, Trump imposed a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian exports and 10 per cent on energy goods.

Canada responded with counter-tariffs worth $30 billion on US products including beverages, electronics, and machinery, alongside 25 per cent duties on American steel, aluminium, and related items.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday said Ottawa remains open to resuming trade discussions, despite the recent escalation.

The dispute stems from a Canadian advertisement that used edited recording of former US President Ronald Reagan’s 1987 radio address to criticise Trump’s trade policies.

Released by Ontario’s provincial government, the ad implied that tariffs harm workers and consumers.

Trump said the message distorted Reagan’s intent.

In the clip, Reagan warns that “trade barriers hurt every American worker and consumer.”

Trump, a strong proponent of protectionist trade measures such as tariffs, accused Ottawa of twisting Reagan’s words and announced the suspension of “all trade negotiations with Canada.”

The Reagan Presidential Foundation denounced the ad, saying it used “selective audio and video” without authorisation.
