US President Donald Trump will host a Diwali celebration at the White House today at 4 pm (1.30 am IST, October 22), marking the festival of lights with Indian-American community members, diplomats, and senior officials, the Hindustan Times reported.

On Monday, Trump extended greetings on the occasion, describing Diwali as “a reminder of light’s victory over darkness and good’s triumph over evil.” His message, published on the White House website, read:

“Today, I send my best wishes to every American celebrating Diwali—the ‘Festival of Lights.’ For many Americans, Diwali is a timeless reminder of light’s victory over darkness. It is also a time to bring families and friends together to celebrate community, draw strength from hope, and embrace a lasting spirit of renewal.”

The President added, “As millions of citizens light diyas and lanterns, we rejoice in the eternal truth that good will always triumph over evil.”

The White House event is expected to feature traditional diya lighting, Indian sweets, and cultural performances. Trump will deliver brief remarks highlighting Diwali’s themes of harmony, renewal, and togetherness.

In recent years, Diwali has gained growing recognition across the United States. Several states—including Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and California—have officially recognized it as a state holiday. California’s Assembly Bill 268, allowing school closures and paid leave for the festival, will come into effect in January 2026.

Major school districts in New York City, Edison and Jersey City (New Jersey), and several parts of Texas have also started observing Diwali as a school holiday, reflecting the festival’s expanding cultural significance in the US.

Meanwhile, trade negotiations between India and the United States are advancing in what officials describe as a “cordial atmosphere,” with both sides narrowing differences on tariffs and market access.

However, tensions persist as President Donald Trump has warned that India will continue facing “massive tariffs” if it fails to reduce its Russian oil imports — a major sticking point in the talks.
