The Union Cabinet on Tuesday (28 October) approved a fertiliser subsidy of Rs 37,952 crore for the 2025 rabi (winter) season, an increase of about Rs 14,000 crore compared to last year’s allocation of Rs 24,000 crore, The Hindu reported.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “The subsidy approved for 2025 rabi season is higher by about Rs 14,000 crore from the previous rabi season.”

He added that the subsidy on phosphorous (P) and sulphur (S) fertilisers had been raised, while those for nitrogen (N) and potash (K) would remain unchanged from the kharif season.

For the rabi season, the subsidy on phosphate will rise to Rs 47.96 per kg from Rs 43.60, and for sulphur to Rs 2.87 per kg from Rs 1.77.

The subsidy on nitrogen and potash will continue at Rs 43.02 and Rs 2.38 per kg, respectively. The new rates will be applicable from 1 October 2025, to 31 March 2026.

Vaishnaw said the Centre determined these rates after assessing import prices, nutrient requirements, subsidy burden, and retail prices.

A special package has also been introduced to ensure a sufficient supply of di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) and triple super phosphate (TSP) for farmers, he noted.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the decision, calling it a major relief for farmers.

He said India’s agriculture sector was achieving record milestones supported by a favourable monsoon, improved water storage, effective planning, and digital innovations.
