An alleged cow smuggler died in an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Police after driving his pickup van over a head constable in Jaunpur late Saturday (17 May) night, Indian Express reported.

Head Constable Durgesh Kumar Singh, who suffered severe injuries, unfortunately passed away during treatment. Notably, the same cow smuggler gang earlier also ran over a sub-inspector on the night of 14 May.

The alleged cow smuggler gang included Salman, who was killed in the encounter, while his two accomplices, Narendra Yadav and Golu Yadav, were injured and are currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital.

Doctors have confirmed that the wounded suspects are now in stable condition. The police stated that three additional associates - Rahul Yadav, Raju Yadav, and Azad Yadav - successfully evaded capture.

Earlier, on 14 May, the same group violently crashed their vehicle into Sub-Inspector Pratima Singh, the officer in charge of the Parauganj police outpost in an attempt to murder her.

Singh sustained severe injuries from the incident and is currently receiving treatment in a Varanasi hospital. In response to the attack, a vehicle inspection initiative was initiated to locate the pickup van involved.

On Saturday evening, a pickup vehicle was signaled to stop by a police team at the Khujji crossing, as it was heading towards Varanasi. The vehicle, however, accelerated instead and hit Head Constable Durgesh Kumar Singh who attempted to halt them. Singh was quickly taken to a Varanasi hospital, where he unfortunately passed away later.

Officials reported that a squad of police officers chased the attackers and discovered their deserted vehicle in the village of Tala Bela, located in the Varanasi district. However, they gathered information that the attackers were heading back to Jaunpur on two motorcycles.

An official reported that the attackers were located in the Chandwak region of Jaunpur. When the police team signaled them to halt, they responded by opening fire.

In the crossfire, Salman sustained a gunshot wound to the chest, while Narendra Yadav and Golu Yadav suffered injuries. It is understood that law enforcement squads have been dispatched to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
