Iran on Tuesday (1 October) night launched a wave of 181 ballistic missiles at Israel, prompting the activation of air raid sirens across the Jewish state and sending nearly 10 million Israelis to seek safety in bomb shelters.

According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), many of the missiles were intercepted by Israel’s sophisticated defence systems, such as the Iron Dome and Arrow.

Despite the interceptions, a few missiles broke through, causing minor damages and some light injuries.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly condemned the attack, and said that Iran had committed a "big mistake" and warned Tehran that it "will pay for it."

This missile barrage marks the second instance of Iran directly targeting Israel in 2024, following a similar offensive in April that was swiftly countered by Israeli and allied defence forces.

Iranian authorities said that Tuesday’s strikes were a direct response to the recent killings of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Israeli military actions.

In response to the missile attack on Israel, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan issued a stark warning to Iran, describing the attack as a "significant escalation" and that there would be "severe consequences", NDTV reported.

Speaking at a White House press briefing, Sullivan assured that the United States would stand by Israel and back any retaliatory actions it might take.

President Joe Biden echoed these sentiments, voicing his complete support for Israel and hinting that military discussions were ongoing to devise a suitable response.

Biden also assured that the US military would aid in Israel’s defence and prevent further Iranian missile strikes. When questioned about the extent of US involvement, Biden noted that talks on a coordinated response were "active" and "ongoing."
