The Election Commission has announced that the Vice Presidential election will take place on 9 September, NDTV reported.
The notification for the election, necessitated by the sudden resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar last month, will be issued on 7 August and the last date for filing nomination papers will be 21 August, the poll panel announced on Friday (1 August).
The results will be declared on the same day, 9 September, the Election Commission said.
The Vice President is elected by an Electoral College consisting of both elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha, as well as elected members of the Lok Sabha.
Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned as Vice President on 21 July, more than two years before the end of his tenure, which was set to conclude on 10 August 2027.
Officially citing medical reasons for his departure, but reports suggest deeper tensions between him and the government, particularly after he declined to support the Centre’s stance on the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Varma.
Article 68, Clause 2 of the Constitution mandates that an election must be held to fill a Vice President vacancy "as soon as possible."
The new Vice President will serve the full five-year term starting from the day they assume office.
The ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) holds a significant advantage in the upcoming election.
The Lok Sabha, with 543 members, has one vacant seat—Basirhat in West Bengal—while five Rajya Sabha seats are vacant.
Four of the Rajya Sabha vacancies are from Jammu and Kashmir, with one from Punjab, caused by the resignation of Aam Aadmi Party’s Sanjeev Arora following his state assembly election win.
The combined effective strength of both Houses is 782, and the winner will need 391 votes if all eligible voters participate.
In the Lok Sabha, the NDA has the support of 293 out of 542 members. In the Rajya Sabha, the NDA is backed by 129 members (out of an effective strength of 240), assuming nominated members align with the ruling alliance.
Thus, the NDA has the backing of 422 members in total.
