Junior doctors continued their protest for the sixth consecutive night at Swasthya Bhawan, in the Salt Lake area of Kolkata as their talks with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee could not materialise.
The doctors have five demands including justice for the 31-year-old trainee doctor raped and murdered at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and assured safety of medical professionals at workplaces.
However, due to their insistence on live streaming the meeting with the West Bengal CM, it could not proceed, as Banerjee stated that live streaming was not permitted because the matter was sub judice.
Banerjee also urged the protesting doctors not to 'insult' her and said, "Why are you people insulting me like this? Earlier on three occasions, I have been waiting but you people didn’t come."
However, when Banerjee promised to video-record the meeting and provide the doctors a copy after permission from the Supreme Court, the doctors agreed and conveyed this to Health Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya.
But then, the doctors were asked to leave suggesting 'it was too late' and that the CM had been waiting for three hours. The protesters alleged the government was not serious about finding a solution.
In a video shared by the junior doctors, Bhattacharya is seen asking them to leave, stating it was too late. "It's over for today. We waited for three hours, but you didn't come in. It's too late now," she was heard saying.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh alleged that one section of the doctors wants a solution whereas the other section wants the disturbance to continue.
