The new terminal being constructed at Bagdogra airport in West Bengal's Siliguri is reportedly expected to be completed by March 2027.
The first phase of the new terminal will span about 70,400 square meters, with a second phase adding another 50,000 square meters, according to Airport Director of Airports Authority of India (AAI) Mohammad Arif.
"A new terminal building is coming up, which means the existing airport will remain in its present form ... we are expecting to meet the set deadline in March 2027. All together the project value is Rs 1,560 crore and the tender will be awarded in two sides... the second tender will focus on air side infrastructure..." Arif was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
Welcoming the announcement, Darjeeling BJP MP Raju Bista said that the new terminal building will be ten times bigger than the existing one.
“I want to congratulate the government on the new terminal. The government has approved Rs 16 crore for the same and the new terminal will be 10 times bigger than the current one. In the future, we are expecting this terminal to make the international and national flights more frequent here..,” Bista said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for the terminal on 20 October last year.
Earlier in August 2024, the Union Cabinet had approved the development of the new civil enclave at Bagdogra airport.
The New Civil Enclave at Bagdogra, with an investment of over Rs 1,500 crore, will feature a 70,390 square meter terminal designed to accommodate 3,000 Peak Hour Passengers (PHP) and an annual capacity of 10 million passengers.
This project includes the construction of an Apron with 10 parking bays for A-321 type aircraft, two link taxiways, and a multi-level car parking facility.
The terminal will be a green building, incorporating renewable energy sources and maximising natural light.
