The Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath led Uttar Pradesh government has intensified its campaign against illegal religious structures across districts adjoining the Nepal border.
Police and Revenue Department teams jointly raided multiple sites, identifying and dismantling encroachments across the region on Thursday (2 May), Indian Express reported.
According to the government, unrecognised madrasas violating norms are being sealed, and religious structures on state land are being demolished.
So far, hundreds of illegal constructions have been targeted under this campaign.
The drive reinforces its zero-tolerance stance on unlawful encroachments and unregulated religious establishments, the government said.
In Shravasti district, five illegal madrasas were sealed on Thursday, while illegal mosques built on government land in Bhartha and Roshan Garh villages of Bhinga tehsil were demolished.
A total of 139 structures have faced action in Shravasti, including 41 religious structures. The authorities have reportedly cleared temporary and permanent encroachments within 15 kilometers of the Nepal border.
Similar drive was also conducted in Pilibhit district.
In Balrampur district, eight madrasas were served notices and three illegal mazars were cleared. Notices were reportedly also issued to five more mazars.
Officials identified 16 encroachments in total. One case involving an Eidgah built without permission is also being reviewed.
Twenty non-compliant madrasas have been shut down violating norms and not following the required curriculum, while two others were served notices for failing to submit required documents on time.
In Bahraich district’s Nanpara and Mihipurwa tehsils, eight encroachments were removed on Wednesday and Thursday, taking the total to 135 illegal structures demolished so far.
Earlier, five madrasas were sealed. On Thursday, individuals voluntarily dismantled encroachments in three cases, officials added.
In Siddharth Nagar district, action was taken against 17 illegal religious structures, including three mosques and 14 unregistered madrasas.
