The Mother Tongue Survey of India (MTSI) project is successfully completed, the annual report 2021-22 of the Ministry of Home Affairs says.
Field videography of 576 mother tongues was done during this survey. The video-graphed speech data of these languages and dialects will be uploaded to National Informatics Centre (NIC) Server for archiving purposes.
The aim is to preserve and analyse the original flavour of each indigenous mother tongue. For this purpose, proper editing in arranging the linguistic data by the in-house linguists is under process.
NIC along with National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) are rendering their exemplary services in documenting and preserving the linguistic data of surveyed mother tongues.
After the enumeration exercise and processing, the data will be disseminated for its use by Government Departments, Universities, Institutes of repute, scholars, students and other data users.
It will also be available on the Census of India website for free download. Census Workstations have also been set up in 18 different Universities/Institutes across the country to allow access to data.
The home ministry said the Linguistic Survey of India (LSI) is a regular research activity in the country since the sixth Five Year Plan.
In continuation to earlier publications under this project, the volume on LSI Jharkhand is finalised and that on LSI Himachal Pradesh is nearing completion.
One can access the LSI draft report of Bihar and Jharkhand on the LSI website. The first part of the LSI final report of West Bengal is also available.
Meanwhile, the field work of LSI Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh is going on.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
