EVKS Elangovan, the father of deceased Congress MLA Thirumahan Evera has been declared as the party’s candidate for the Erode East bypolls.
Elangovan is a former president of the Tamil Nadu unit of the Congress and also a former Union minister. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he had lost to P Ravindhranath (son of O Panneerselvam) in Theni. It was the only seat lost by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) led alliance.
Elangovan’s candidature was confirmed after receiving approval from Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
While his name was being considered initially, he had reportedly ruled himself out and was favouring the candidature of his other son, Sanjay Sampath.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
