2. ☸️ Bihar: ASI's empty boast
Claim v/s truth: ASI boasted of taking back control of a holy 2300-year-old Buddhist shrine in Bihar’s Sasaram from Muslim encroachers.
However, it turns out that the boast was an empty one because Muslims have been allowed to worship at the shrine.
Muslims claimed the cavern to be the mazar (mausoleum) of an obscure Sufi saint and captured the place in 2005.
Lord Buddha is believed to have spent a night at this cavern after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya in 528 BCE and hence it's a Buddhist shrine.
The encroachment: The place has one of Ashoka’s 13 minor rock edicts but it was damaged by Muslim captors in a bid to erase them.
A large dargah also came up next to the cavern and a part of the dargah even encroached on the roof of the cavern.
ASI's requests of clearing the encroachment were ignored on Bihar CM Nitish Kumar's directives.
