Bangalore Watch Company (BWC) has launched a cool new series called the Apogee Karman Line. These watches are are mix of Indian style + tested in space.

A bit of context: BWC partnered with a UK space engineering firm for the ambitious Karman line project. This new series, the Apogee Karman Line, is a sequel to its original Apogee collection.

  • Their goal? To create watches that could handle the tough conditions of space.

  • Prototype watches from the Apogee Karman Line series hitched a ride on a high-altitude balloon.

  • They soared up into the sky, nearly touching space! Plus, their dials were made from a unique meteorite!

  • Once the prototype watches proved they could handle the journey, BWC made 50 more just like them. Each one has a piece of that special meteorite dial. And you can buy one for Rs 240,000.

Why space though: BWC's foray into space-themed watches isn't altogether out of nowhere.

  • It all began in 2021, with the launch of their Apogee collection.

  • They were based and titled around various space themes such as Mazinus, Supernova, Horizon, and Earthshine.

  • The Manzinus model, in particular, paid tribute to India’s Chandrayaan missions, with its name derived from an impact crater on the Moon.

  • Chandrayaan-3's touchdown near Manzinus U served as a source of inspiration for BWC.

But BWC isn't stopping there. They want to make watches that astronauts could wear in space

  • They're thinking about teaming up with the Indian space program for that. This project is a big deal.

  • Our in-house science and tech editor, Karan, has been keeping an eye on this exciting watch company for quite some time. He wrote a profile about them a few months ago.

Ending today's email with a fitting quote: Is the sky the limit?
