Navratri Notes: She Flows Like Ganga, Saraswati, And Also Like Oshun Of The Yorubas Of Africa

Dear Reader,

River Goddesses are revered across civilisations — be it Ganga, Saraswati, Kaveri, or Oshun of the Yorubas of Africa. So today, in Navaratri Notes, we have a piece on the 'River Goddess Oshun'.

Nourishing as a mother, she flows. In her flow, she creates civilisations. In her furious floods, she destroys. In her flow, she is the time. Through the water cycle, she emphasises the cyclic nature of time. She also flows through time.

The River Goddess thus is the memory of all that has flown through Her.

In addition to the Navaratri Notes, read this part XXI of Aravindan Neelakandan's commentary on Lalita Sahasranama 'Random Meditations Through Her 1,000 Names (XXI): The Flowers Adorning Her Ears'.

The flowers the goddess wears over her earlobes are the kadamba, the inflorescence of which was used to establish the shape of the planet. In tantric rituals and in showing devotion to the goddess, the kadamba tree occupies a very important place.

'Dravidian Stockists' Play Into Pawan Kalyan's Hands As Andhra Leader Stirs Tamil Nadu's Political Waters

From a communist sympathiser to a Gandhian to a spirited Sanatana Dharma warrior, Jana Sena leader and actor Pawan Kalyan could be called a 'Maverick'. But that too would seem a bit polite says K Balakumar in this piece.

Andhra Pradesh deputy CM has decided to take on the anti-Sanatan voices in southern India and in the process, he's left the godless 'Dravidian stockists' disoriented.

It is a rather intriguing strategy that Kalyan is deploying. Read Balakumar's piece to get a nuance of the same.

And then in the Hindi heartland, we have Congress getting nervous about its fate in Jharkhand — thanks to its ally JMM.

What Hemant Soren is doing to the Congress in Jharkhand has already been done (successfully) by Lalu Yadav in neighbouring Bihar.

Read Abhishek's piece 'Congress Fears JMM's Bihar-Style Squeeze Ahead Of Jharkhand Election' — for a sense of this insecurity of Congress.

Until tomorrow,
