Following his remarks characterising the Congress party as a "family-run party," senior party leader and Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Shashi Tharoor has clarified that his comments were misinterpreted.
In a statement released on X, he underscored the pivotal role of the Nehru-Gandhi family as the bedrock of the grand old party, emphasising their substantial influence within the organisation.
I see that a remark I made at a private event, which was not a formal statement crafted for public consumption, is being misrepresented by the usual people. Yes, I have frequently stated that the Nehru/Gandhi family's DNA is inextricably tied up with that of the Congress Party.â¦

Tharoor elaborated that his earlier statements were made during a private event and were not an official public statement.
He highlighted his consistent acknowledgment of the intertwined connection between the Nehru-Gandhi family and the Congress party, asserting that the family represents the strength of the party.
Moreover, he implicitly suggested that Rahul Gandhi would likely be the preferred choice among Congress party workers in any internal party poll.
Tharoor's initial remarks had triggered a lively debate, especially regarding potential candidates for the prime minister's post in the event of an INDI Alliance victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
